Holiday Safety Tip: Planning your family holiday baking session? Make sure your smoke alarms are on and working properly! Two out of three house fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Dead batteries are also the cause of 24% of smoke alarm failures! Here are a few smoke alarm safety tips:
- Follow manufacturer’s instructions for testing alarms, usually once per month by pressing and holding the “test” button.
- Replace the batteries at least once a year! Set an annual reminder for a easy-to-remember date, like an anniversary or the 4th of July.
- Replace the entire alarm unit every eight to ten years.
You may even want to install several different types of smoke alarms. Ionization alarms are faster to warn about flaming fires, while photoelectric alarms are quicker to warn of smoldering fire. However, dual sensor alarms have the best of both worlds and contain both types of smoke sensors! You can also consider adding some Smart home technology to your family’s home! Smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as flood detectors, can raise an alarm on your phone when there’s a leak.
