This week is National Fire Prevention Week! We’ll be sharing fire prevention tips and easy home fixes all week!
Our first, and easiest, tip? Make sure you have adequate smoke alarm protection! The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that 2 out of 3 house fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Even worse is the fact that 24% of smoke alarm failures are due to dead batteries! Make sure to test your smoke alarm once a month, if the sound is weak or inaudible install new batteries! Additionally, you can also set an annual calendar reminder to help make sure you install new batteries at least once a year. Pick an easy to remember date, like an anniversary or holiday! Here are a few more basic smoke alarm safety tips:
- Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home.
- Large homes will likely need extra smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Make sure all your alarms are interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.
- You should replace your entire smoke alarm system every ten years.
You can also consider adding some Smart home technology to your family’s home! Smart smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors, as well as flood detectors, can raise an alarm on your phone when there’s a leak. Farmers Insurance even offers discounts to homeowners who have invested in protective equipment for their home! Click here to read more of our blog posts regarding home fire safety.
