Roadside Emergency Safety: 10 Smart Steps
Accidents are never convenient. Make sure you’ve saved our phone number in your cell phone just in case of a roadside emergency! Here are Farmers Insurance’s 10 Smart Steps for roadside emergency safety:
-
-
-
- First, get off the road! Look for a wide shoulder, emergency lane, or exit so that you can get out of the flow of traffic
- Then, let others know there’s something wrong. Always utilize your hazard lights for everyone’s safety!
- Do not let your vehicle until you’re out of traffic. If you can’t get your car out of harms way, don’t get out.
- Safely exit your car. Exit through the passenger side, if at all possible. You never want to open the car door on the traffic side!
- Increase your visibility! Use flares, hazard triangles, or pop the hood so it’s obvious that you’re having troubles.
- Call roadside assistance. We’re here to help, 24/7! Put your carrier’s roadside assistance number in your cell phone, just in case you ever need it.
- Stay with your car. It’s better to wait for assistance at the scene of your disabled vehicle.
- Keep emergency supplies in your car. Have basics, such as a blanket, a first aid kit, and water, with you at all times for in case of emergencies.
- Put your hood down. After you have changed your tire or the tow truck arrives, close your hood and store any flares or other supplies. Otherwise another driver may risk slowing down to help.
- Finally, clean up the scene! Pick up any packaging, trash, and debris before you leave.
